Yesterday we were at Vestmannaeyjar, also known as Westmann Island or Puffins Island. We had the chance to meet an islander and he told as all about this incredible place, we learned about the eruptions that has taken place here and the untouched culture they have, i mean, kids learn how to look for bird eggs in the mountains at a really young age. It doesn't get any more viking-like culture than that. ⠀
The entire island is made of volcanic ashes and rocks which makes it a difficult land to grow things. ⠀
Approximately 4500 people live here and over 8 million puffins too! We also learned that, around summer, kids go out at night to rescue millions of baby puffins that cant fly and land on the streets, houses, etc. ⠀
Here took place the Endfell eruption in 1973, a monster of 200 meters that erupted (660 ft) high destroying most of the city. These people literally fought against the lava trying to save the city using big water pumps to change the lava's direction. By the end of the eruption, that lasted for 5 months, half of the town was crushed. You can walk around the big lava stones today, and some of the houses crushed by the lava. They also leaved some of the water pumps as a reminder. ⠀
This cross was placed where the eruption started in 1973. The entire place is dead, covered in lava stones and tick fog. ⠀
